The Graduate School of Teacher Education offers the Exciting Learning Classroom, a learning support program for elementary school students who are struggling with reading and writing, in collaboration with the Pediatric LD Outpatient Clinic of the Hospital of the School of Medicine, the Department of Orthoptics of the Faculty of Medical Technology, and the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Liberal Arts. Through the Exciting Learning Classroom, students can also learn about learning support that integrates medicine, psychology, and special needs education.
Participants in the class are children and students who visit Pediatrics LD Outpatient Teikyo University Hospital and request instruction. Junior high school students are only allowed to participate if they have been in elementary school and wish to continue receiving instruction.
The instruction is based on medical diagnosis and psychological assessment and is provided by teachers who specialize in special needs education, and the content is designed to develop the ability to listen, speak, read, write, calculate, and reason according to the characteristics of each child and student. In the assessment, a systematic and comprehensive visual function evaluation may be conducted with the cooperation of teachers from the Department of Department of Orthoptics Faculty of Medical Technology, and the Department Department of Psychology Faculty of Liberal Arts, and visual function training may also be implemented.
The Waku Waku Learning Classroom not only serves as a place for clinical practice, but also serves as a place for research on assessment and instruction of learning disabilities, and for students and Graduate School to learn about the practice of special needs education. It also aims to contribute to the local community by coordinating with schools where students who use the classroom are enrolled and with schools in the vicinity of the university.
