Graduate School of Public Health Students Conduct International Health Practicum at University of Southern California,Itabashi Campus

On August 25 (Mon) ~ 28 (Thu), 2025, Teikyo University Graduate School Graduate School of Public Health students visited University of Southern California (University of Southern California (USC) and conducted an internship in international health science.
This internship is based on the academic agreement between Teikyo University and USC signed in 2017 and was planned as an extension of student exchange at Teikyo International Summer School. Previously, we have accepted students from USC for a credit transfer program called Teikyo International Summer School, but this is the first time that we have sent students from our university. The implementation was carried out through preparation and design in collaboration with Soichiro Obara of the Graduate School of Associate Professor and Ryan Seuffert, Program Manager of USC Global Medicine.

This time, a total of three participants, two students and one faculty member, deepened their international perspectives by attending classes and visiting facilities on-site. In classes at the USC Global Medicine Program, they learned about anatomy, malaria, and an introduction to global health, and understood that health issues are universal. They also toured the USC Student Health Center, observing cutting-edge initiatives such as mental health support and the installation of pharmaceutical vending machines containing the opioid antagonist naloxone to combat the opioid crisis. They also visited a homeless neighborhood in central Los Angeles, experiencing firsthand health disparities and support for the socially vulnerable.
Participating students shared their impressions, such as, "By experiencing local classes and facilities firsthand, I realized that learning about global health is not just theoretical, but is directly connected to reality," and "I was able to experience firsthand the differences between the systems in Japan and the United States, which was a great inspiration for my future career," demonstrating the high educational benefits of the program.
This internship not only contributed to the promotion of the university's internationalization, but also opened up possibilities for expansion into undergraduate education and international collaboration in joint research and education. Teikyo University will continue to promote two-way exchanges between students and faculty, further promoting internationalization.
