On Monday, December 9, 2024, at the 21st Environmental Information Science Poster Session held at Nihon University Hall Headquarters (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), Professor Sotaro Tsuboi of Faculty of Economics Department of Regional Economics, Teikyo University, received the Chairman Award.
The award-winning presentation, "Practical research into establishing a self-reliant, decentralized disaster response system in communities at risk of being isolated - A case study of Ina City, Nagano Prefecture," outlined the issues surrounding isolated communities in disasters, which were also exposed in the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred in January of this year, and summarized, through practical experience on the ground, measures that can help communities in mountainous areas to become self-reliant even if they become isolated.
In the field, we held workshops in the target communities to create local timelines with the participation of local residents, and deployed Phase Free, which repurposes long-distance drones that are used to support shopping in peacetime to transport supplies in the event of a disaster. We also implemented multi-stakeholder disaster prevention support, involving local elementary, junior high, and high school students and independent disaster prevention associations in supporting the communities.
This award is given to outstanding presentations (posters) of practice and research on environmental information science, and the local practice thus far has been highly evaluated, leading to the award. We look forward to seeing further efforts toward social implementation through research in the future.
