A student from Itabashi Campuswon the Outstanding Presentation Award at the 56th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Medical Laboratory Science

At the 56th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Laboratory Science, held at Pacifico Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture from Friday, October 4th to Sunday, October 6th, 2024, Yasuna Kimura (4th year, Faculty of Medical Technology) won the JACLaS Award I Outstanding Presentation Award.

Kimura is conducting research under the supervision of Kana Miyata, Senior Assistant Professor in the Department Department of Clinical Laboratory Science Faculty of Medical Technology Teikyo University, and presented a paper at this conference titled "Search for morphological markers to predict primary lung adenocarcinoma." This research has been undertaken by fourth-year students in the department since 2021 as their graduation research, and is the result of collaborative research by 11 students.
In this study, morphological findings in cytology specimens that predict that tumor cells are derived from lung cancer were examined. Cytology tests find atypical cells (cancer cells) in specimens taken from the human body and also determine whether the cells obtained are benign or malignant, but they are said to be unsuitable for detecting the primary focus of tumors. This research was highly praised for its potential to compensate for this shortcoming, leading to the award. We look forward to seeing great success from Kimura and the 11 other co-researchers in the future.
