From Wednesday, June 26th to Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024, a teaching practice was held for the "Japanese Language Education Practical Approach" class taught by Professor Hino Junko of Faculty of Education Department of Education and Culture, Teikyo University. This class is a required subject in the Japanese language teacher training course, and aims to help students acquire the appropriate attitude to guide and support Japanese language learners. The teaching practice was carried out as part of the required Japanese language subjects taught by the Center for Japanese language Education of our university, and under the guidance of faculty members from the center, students taught classes to first and second year international students after observing classes in advance.
Shimojo Yudai (4th year, Faculty of Education) and his colleagues taught a class on the theme of "Classification" to the first-year Japanese IA class. They explained how they made the class more creative, saying, "When I observed the classes, I noticed that many students were proactive and spoke up, so I thought it was a lively class, so I structured the lesson to give the international students more opportunities to speak up and participate actively."
In the second-year Japanese language ⅢA class, Rina Uchibori (4th year, Faculty of Education) and Mayuko Tanabe (4th year, Faculty of Language Studies) taught a class on the theme of "refutation," in which students were asked to write persuasive essays from two different positions: "Are you for or against elementary school students owning smartphones?" The international students worked on writing essays using conjunctions. Uchibori and Tanabe talked about the difficulties they faced in class, saying, "We had to be conscious of using simple words in Japanese that the international students could easily understand, and we often had to be careful about time allocation."
At our university's Faculty of Education, it is possible to obtain a Japanese language teaching qualification in parallel with a license to teach elementary school or English. Also, universities that have a Japanese language teaching course in a faculty or department that trains teachers are rare across the country, and every year a certain number of students graduate with both qualifications. Uchibori and others are also participating in teaching practice while aiming to become elementary school teachers in Department of Elementary Education Department. They explained their motivation for seeking a Japanese language teaching qualification, saying, "There are an increasing number of children with foreign roots, and there are situations where they are not receiving adequate support, so I wanted to become a teacher who has the skills to deal with these children."
Teikyo University will continue to nurture talented people who can play an active role in the international community, such as teachers who can support the learning of children with foreign roots and people involved in Japanese language education overseas.
