Teaching practice held for Japanese teacher training course atHachioji Campus

From June 26 (Wed.) to July 2 (Tue.), 2024, Teikyo University Faculty of Education Department of Education and Culture Professor conducted a teaching practice in "Practical Approach to Japanese Language Education" taught by Junko Hino. This class is a required course in the Japanese language teacher training program and is designed to help students acquire an appropriate attitude toward teaching and supporting Japanese language learners. The teaching practice is conducted as part of the required Japanese language courses taught by the university's Center for Japanese language Education. Under the guidance of the center's faculty members, the class is taught to first- and second-year international students after a preliminary class observation.
Mr. Yudai Shimojo (Faculty of Education, 4th year) and Mr. Mitsuhiro Meguro (Faculty of Education, 4th year), who gave a class on the theme of "Classification" in Japanese I A for first-year students, said, "During the class observation, I thought the class was lively with many students actively speaking, so I arranged the class so that international students would have many opportunities to speak up and participate proactively. She talked about the points she tried to make the class more active.
In the 2nd year Japanese III A class, Rina Uchibori (Faculty of Education, 4th year) and Mayuko Tanabe (Faculty of Language Studies, 4th year) gave a class on the theme of "anti-exposure" in which students were asked to write persuasive sentences from two viewpoints: "Are you for or against elementary school students owning smart phones? Ms. Uchibori and Ms. Tanabe spoke of the difficulties they faced in the class, saying, "We had to be careful to speak in Japanese using simple words that would be easily understood by the international students, and to pay attention to time allocation.
At the university's Faculty of Education, it is possible to obtain certification as a Japanese language teacher along with a license to teach elementary school or English language. It is rare in Japan for a university to offer a Japanese language teacher training program in a faculty or department that trains teachers, and a certain number of students graduate each year with both certifications. Ms. Meguro and Ms. Uchibori, who are also participating in the teaching practice while studying to become elementary school teachers in the same department (Department of Elementary Education), explained their motivation for becoming certified Japanese language teachers: "The number of children with foreign roots is increasing, and there is a situation where support is not being provided adequately. I wanted to become a teacher with the skills to deal with such children.

Teikyo University will continue to nurture talented people who can play an active role in the international community, such as teachers who can support the learning of children with foreign roots and people involved in Japanese language education overseas.
