On Wednesday, April 3, 2023, Tsuyoshi Yamada, Associate Professor Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology, in an international collaborative study with Shinya Ohata, Associate Professor at Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Musashino University, Masaki Ishii, Senior Assistant Professor at the same department, and Michel Monod, Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Biology and School of Medicine and University Hospital of Lausanne University in Switzerland, identified the protein TrPtk2, which is involved in the natural resistance of terbinafine, a drug used to treat athlete's foot, and discovered that the effects of terbinafine can be enhanced by using the gastric acid suppressant omeprazole in combination with terbinafine.
It is expected that the results of this research will lead to the discovery of a new treatment for terbinafine-resistant tinea fungus (athlete's foot), the number of which has been increasing in recent years.
