[Title] The Eco-Recycling Situation in Edo and its Background
[Lecturer] Kazuhiro Akumoto (Professor Emeritus, Teikyo University)

Edo was one of the world's largest cities at the time, and boasted clean and orderly streets that surprised foreigners who visited the city at the end of the Edo period. This tradition has been passed down to modern-day Japanese cities and is highly valued by inbound tourists. The high spirituality behind it has been passed down continuously since the Edo period, and the heroic French diplomat and great poet Paul Claudel, who stayed in Japan for many years as the French ambassador during the Taisho period, also praised the Japanese, saying that if there was one ethnic group he wanted to preserve in the world, it would be the Japanese. In this lecture, we will explore the spiritual and cultural background of Edo's water and sewage network, recycling of various materials, childcare and education methods, etc., to deepen our understanding of the traditional spirituality of the Japanese, and use it as an opportunity to think about how it can be applied to the diverse, complex, and serious environmental problems of today.
