On Friday, September 6, 2024, eight international students from Teikyo University's TAEP (Teikyo University Asia Exchange Program) visited the Supreme Court and met with Justice Oka Masaaki. TAEP is a program established at Hachioji Campus with the aim of cultivating human resources who will contribute to the development of Japan and the Asian region, and currently has agreements with universities in seven Southeast Asian countries and accepts international students. Southeast Asia has achieved steady development, but also faces various challenges. A reliable judicial system is extremely important for stable politics and economic growth. During this visit, the international students had the opportunity to experience a close-up look at the Japanese judicial system.
The visit was made possible because Supreme Court Justice Oka was a university classmate of Yoshiya Seto, Professor in the Faculty of Faculty of Economics at our university who teaches international business at TAEP. Professor Seto then consulted with Justice Oka, who kindly kindly agreed to make the visit possible.
On the day, eight international students and Professor Seto, who acted as their guide and interpreter, visited the Supreme Court with the guidance of Justice Oka's secretary, Kashiwagi, and listened to a staff member talk about the Supreme Court's functions and roles at the library. At the end of the visit, the students had a discussion with Justice Oka. The international students asked questions about the challenges facing the Japanese judicial system and the mindset of a lawyer, and Justice Oka answered each one carefully.
The TAEP students had the rare opportunity to experience the atmosphere inside the Supreme Court and talk with a current Supreme Court justice, which was a valuable opportunity to broaden their horizons.
