Hachioji CampusHachioji City Hosts 26th Annual Summer Science Class for Children

The Hachioji City Summer Children's Science Class was held at Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus on Monday, July 29, 2024. This class, now in its 27th year, has been held since 1997 at the request of the Hachioji City Board of Education in collaboration with the Hachioji City Elementary School Science Education Center, with the aim of increasing the scientific interest and scientific thinking skills of children attending Hachioji City elementary schools.

On the day, 73 students were divided into groups and worked on the theme of "What is DNA, the blueprint of life?" with Professor Makimura Koichi, Vice Head of Center of the Medical Mycology Research Center at our university, and the instructors. The students carefully extracted DNA from the milt of pufferfish, sucked it up with a dropper, and placed it in a small vial to take home as the results of their experiment.
During the question and answer session, the children enthusiastically raised their hands, and the supervising teacher responded clearly and accurately. Our university will continue to provide opportunities to increase the interest of many children in science.
