International students from our Hachioji Campusparticipated in an interactive appreciation session of the 78th Japan Calligraphy Institute Exhibition

On Saturday, April 20, 2024, three international students from Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus participated in an interactive appreciation session of the 78th Japan Calligraphy Institute Exhibition, held at Grand Cube Osaka (Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture). This event was held as a pre-event related to the calligraphy exhibition booth at the Osaka-Kansai Expo in 2025, and its purpose was to introduce Japanese calligraphy culture to international students and deepen intercultural understanding.
From our university, Cornejo Cruz Ludvig Gerard (4th year, Faculty of Liberal Arts), Nguyen Hoang Huy (1st year Graduate School of Economics), and Criste Justina (1st year Graduate School of Liberal Arts) participated, and Song Sika, a graduate of our Graduate School Division of Japanese Cultures accompanied them as an interpreter. After viewing the exhibition, the international students exchanged opinions on the works in the exhibition, calligraphy techniques, Japanese and their own cultures, etc., with Yasuko Dobashi, Chairman the Japan Calligraphy Institute, as the moderator. The participating international students shared their impressions, saying, "It was a very interesting experience to talk about the feelings that emanated from a single work," "I realized that even if foreigners cannot understand the words themselves, they can feel the message of the artist from the handwriting," and "I have come to see calligraphy works as something to feel and appreciate with your heart."
It was a valuable opportunity for international students to experience Japanese calligraphy and served as a model case for intercultural exchange through calligraphy.
